Description

The barn at Hormead Hall is an early 17th-century structure. It features a timber frame set on a red brick sill in English bond and is covered with dark weatherboarding and a steep thatched roof. The barn has a tall five-bay design facing south, with a central rear outshut opposite the double doors and a small door to the right. It includes jowled posts with long straight braces connecting to the tie beams and the central rear outshut. The roof is a clasped-purlin type with raking queen-struts and thin rafters. The door posts and lintel extend above the eaves, supported by a swept roof and ovolo-shaped brackets at the heads of the doorposts. Additionally, there is a face-halved bladed scarf joint in the rear wallplate.
