Description

This is a farmhouse, dating to around 1500. A floor was added to the main hall around 1600, and a north end was built later, in the 18th century. The central chimney replaced what was originally a smoke bay. A northwest wing was added around 1960. The house is an "AT" shaped open-hall and crosswing arrangement, facing east. A central chimney is located at the upper end of the hall, and the front entrance has a porch situated on the line of the screens passage. The building has a timber frame with a tarred brick sill, and is roughcast with old red tiled roofs, hipped with a gablet at the north end and half-hipped at the west gables. Two original three-light diamond mullioned windows remain on the south side of the crosswing. Generally, two-light flush casement windows are present. The front of the house features a jettied crosswing on the left-hand side and a hipped roof over the porch. The hall range has smoke-blackened rafters. The roof has a clasped-purlin structure. Wind braces are found in the wing and tension bracing in the north end wall. A former staircase is located at the rear of the crosswing. The hall, which dates to around 1600, has chamfered and stopped floor joists. It is an impressive late medieval hall house.
