Description

The Rose and Crown Public House is a building that originally served as a house, dating back to the 16th century for the eastern end, with the rest constructed in the 17th century. It underwent renovations by brewers around 1950. The structure features a timber frame set on a low stucco plinth, with roughcast at the rear and weatherboarding at the ends. The front is roughcast over red brick facing at the heads of the ground floor windows.

This two-storey building has a three-cell layout with a central chimney, which is located on the rear slope about a third from the west and has been rebuilt at the top. The front has four divisions, with three windows and the pub name displayed after the left-hand window. There are two rectangular bay windows, each with four lights, and a central four-light window flanked by two battened doors that are sheltered by moulded flat hoods supported by heavy brackets.

Inside, the building retains exposed timbers, with heavy, roughly dressed joists in the eastern part, a deeply chamfered beam, and expanded ends to the side timbers. The axial beam and joists in the middle room, or hall, feature chamfered and ogee stops, and the fireplace has been altered. Additionally, there is an eight-panel 17th-century door with hinges located in the rear wall at the northeast corner.
