HERTFORD BALLS PARK Walls to sunken garden approximately 130 metres south west of Balls Park Mansion

GV II Walls to sunken garden. c1910. Two levels of red brick retaining walls with York stone caps. Axial arrangement influenced by Gertrude Jekyll, with steps in the centre of each side, and a circular centre bed, formerly a pool. Perimeter of garden has curved benches formed of stacked tile-creasing with Portland stone seats; smaller bench of similar construction outside garden adjoining north gates has Portland stone tablet inscribed 'Ben's Garden'. Pair of wrought-iron scrollwork gates, possibly reset, at north entrance; south entrance has single dwarf gate in coursed rubble piers.

HISTORICAL NOTE: the sunken garden was constructed after Balls Park had been acquired by Sir George Faudel Phillips in 1901. His eldest son, Benjamin undertook restoration and embellishment of the gardens. He succeeded to the property and title in 1922, but died in 1927, and the seat was installed in his memory by his younger brother, Lionel.
