Description
The ice house at Youngsbury, located 350 meters west-southwest of the main house, dates from the late 18th century, with the date '1793' marked on a brick at the entrance. It is constructed of plum brick and features a segmental vaulted entrance tunnel that is approximately 3 meters long and 2 meters high at its crown. This tunnel leads into a circular chamber about 5 meters in diameter, which has a higher segmental domed top and a steep conical well made of brickwork. The tunnel enters the chamber high up at the springing of the dome and includes two rebates for doors along its length. The exit of the ice house is situated beneath the roots of a beech tree.
