Description
The garden wall at Thundridge House is a structure dating from around 1855, built using Hitch's patent bricks. It forms a sub-rectangular walled garden situated between the house and the road, enclosed on all four sides by a shoulder-height wall. The wall features triangular buttresses at intervals and square gatepiers located in the middle of the side closest to the house. This wall is particularly notable for its use of various types of large bricks patented by Caleb Hitch of Ware in 1828, which measure approximately 12 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches. Each brick has flanges and cavities that interlock, which helps to reduce the amount of mortar needed and enhances the wall's structural strength. These bricks are primarily found in the vicinity of Ware.
