Description

The stables at Stanstead Bury, located 55 metres south of the house, were built around 1689 for Edmund Field. This stable and coach house block is two storeys high and constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with lighter red brick used for the openings, flat gauged arches, and a floor band. The roof is steep and hipped, covered with old red tiles and featuring three slate courses at the eaves. The building faces east and has two pairs of boarded double doors to the coach house in the middle. Above these, there are two windows that consist of two-light wooden casements, one of which has been created by bricking up the lower part of a first-floor doorway. The south part of the building has a symmetrical arrangement of two windows flanking a door on each floor, with the upper door being an altered window. The north part was formerly similar but now has an upper low door in a heavy frame, while the lower door has been replaced by 19th-century double doors. The rear elevation is plain, featuring a high floor band and small windows located under the eaves.
