Description

Milestone opposite Cell Park is an 18th-century milestone located on the Dunstable Road (A5). It was created for the Dunstable-St. Albans-London Turnpike Trust, which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1722. This milestone is situated on a section of Watling Street that was retained by Thomas Telford during his improvements to The Holyhead Road in the early 19th century. The milestone is made of white freestone and measures approximately 15 inches by 15 inches and stands 30 inches high. The base is tarred, and there are remnants of white paint along with black painted cut letters. The east face has been cut back to allow for repeated re-cutting of the inscription. The current inscription, in 19th-century sans-serif capitals, reads 'LONDON/29/ST ALBANS/8 1/2/DUNSTABLE/3'.
