Description

The Markyate War Memorial was erected in 1921. It is constructed from Portland Stone and takes the form of a simple cross set upon a square, tapered pillar, a further tapered plinth, and a two-stepped base. Forty names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the plinth using lead lettering. A low plinth wall made of red brick surrounds the memorial, with matching red brick gate piers and double-leaf cast-iron gates to the east. The west wall displays a roll of honour listing the names of those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945), as well as conflicts in Greece (1948) and Northern Ireland (1974). The east-facing elevation of the plinth is inscribed with the words: “TO / THE GLORY OF GOD / AND / IN MEMORY OF / THE MEN / OF THE PARISH OF / MARKYATE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918”. The east-facing elevation of the base reads: "WELL DONE THOU GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT".
