Description
Shaw’s Cottage comprises two adjoining houses, dating to the 18th century, with an early 19th-century rear workshop added. The northern part of the building is slightly later than the southern. The houses are constructed of red sandy brick, with a stucco plinth and southern gable. A grey brick rear workshop is attached, and the roofs are of steep old red tiles, except for the rear outshut and workshop which have slate coverings.
The main house, facing west, is two storeys and symmetrical, with a central entrance and end chimneys. A rear outshut extends from the main house under a catslide roof. A two-storey extension, with a single window, is located on the north side. The north gable has an internal chimney, and the northwest corner features a corbelled angle above a canted ground-floor window. The rear range connects the main house to a two-storey workshop block facing south.
The west front has four small-pane, two-light casement windows on the first floor, and three sash windows with two-over-two panes on the ground floor, all set beneath cambered arches. Two doorways, each with a two-panel, flush-beaded, divided door under a flat hood supported by shaped brackets, provide access. Toothed stucco quoins are visible at the southwest corner. The building is included on the list for its group value.
