Description
River Hill Cottage is a property that was originally two houses, and possibly three, which have now been combined into one. The southern part dates from the 18th century or earlier, while the northern part is from the 18th century, with early 19th century brick fronts on both sections. The building features a timber frame with roughcast and painted brick casing, and has steep old red tile roofs, with the front slope of the southern part being slated.
The structure is an irregular two-storey L-shaped group facing east. The southern part includes a two-storey gabled rear wing at the southwest, which has a lower hipped roof extension to the west. The northern part is slightly advanced in front of the southern part and is also two-storeys high. The southern section has a two-cells internal chimney and a lobby-entry plan, with a rear service wing and a passage through the front range at the northern end, which has been converted to the main entrance.
The eastern front has a low stucco plinth and features two windows on each floor, with sash windows consisting of three panes under cambered arches with plastered reveals. There is a central door in a heavy frame with a round arched recess above, and a county fire insurance plaque is situated above the door. The northern part has an eastern elevation and a shared central chimney that dates from its 19th-century conversion into two houses. It has two windows on each floor, two blocked doorways toward the ends, and a door to the passage at the northern end that is currently in use. The first floor has two-light flush Yorkshire sliding casements, while the ground floor has three-light flush casement windows. The ground floor openings feature segmental arches, and there is a plank door leading to the passage. The northern end has a plastered recessed gable triangle. This property is included for its group value.
