Description

Berkhamsted School Old Building, formerly known as The Grammar School, was founded by John Incent around 1523, who was the Dean of Saint Paul's. The building was constructed in 1544 using red brick with stone dressing and features a tiled roof. It has two storeys at either end and a tall central section that is one storey high, characterized by large stone mullioned windows with depressed pointed heads. The structure includes four gables, two at each end.

Inside, the hall consists of six bays with a tiebeam roof truss and King posts, along with restored carved corbels. The rooms at either end contain five original chimney pieces made of chamfered stone, each featuring four-centred arches. The building was restored in 1841. The Berkhamsted School Old Building, School Chapel, and New Hall are part of a cohesive group.
