Description
The Church of Saint Peter is a Grade II* listed building with a Latin cross plan and a tower at the crossing. It mainly dates from the 13th and 15th centuries and was restored by Butterfield in 1871. The church features a nave, aisles, clerestory, transepts, chancel, and north and south chapels. Inside, there are two 14th-century altar tombs with alabaster effigies. Later monuments include a table tomb from 1682 and a wall monument with an urn from 1758, which has bas reliefs added in 1787 and 1811, along with a carved figure from 1823.
John Cowper, the father of the poet William Cowper, served as Rector here for 34 years. The Church of Saint Peter and the Smith-Dorrien Monument are part of a group.
