Description
The Berkhamsted War Memorial is a First World War memorial, with later additions for the Second World War, erected around 1920. The names of those who fell in the Second World War were added after 1945.
The memorial is carved from stone and is located immediately to the west of the south aisle of the Church of St Peter, next to Church Lane and the High Street. It stands opposite the Grade II-listed medieval church and near several 16th-century houses that are also listed as Grade II and Grade II.
The memorial features a Greek cross at the top of a tapering octagonal shaft with a moulded base. This shaft rises from a moulded octagonal plinth, which sits on a three-tier stepped octagonal base. The top tier of the base has an inscription in incised lettering that reads "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ 1914-18/ NAMES." Eight stone panels are inscribed with the names of 182 individuals who died during the First World War. The plinth is inscribed with "1939-1945/ NAMES," and it includes four stone panels bearing the names of 94 individuals who fell in the Second World War.
