Description
This is a large house, originally dating back to the 17th century, located on Kingshill Way. It is now used as the National Film Archive. The house has undergone several alterations over time, with wings added to the northwest and northeast in the 18th century, a long rear range constructed in the early 19th century, service extensions added to the northwest in the 19th century, and a southeast wing built in the late 19th century. A lower range extending to the south side was built as a ballroom.
The house is constructed of brick walls, mostly plastered, with stucco on the later additions. The roofs are covered in old red tiles, with slate on the newer sections, and the southeast wing has a hipped roof. It is a two-storey building with an irregular plan. A half-octagonal wing and a gabled wing project from the left and right sides of the north facade. The central section features a plinth, a moulded floor band, dentilled eaves, a central door with a moulded surround and a full entablature, a three-light mullion and transom window with ovolo moulded glazing from the 17th century on the left, and a copy on the right. There are also two four-light wooden casement windows on the first floor, and a rear lateral chimney stack with an open fireplace with a wooden lintel in the hall, alongside three diagonally set chimney shafts.
A large external chimney is located on the east side of the left-hand wing, featuring two octagonal brick shafts with moulded caps and bases. The rear facade is symmetrical and incorporates two recessed sash windows with 3/3 panes and external shutters on each floor, along with a pilastered doorcase with double doors and an open pediment.
