Description
The wellhouse at St Margaret's Farm, located 10 meters west of the farmhouse, is a building dating from around 1882, constructed as part of improvements on Lord Brownlow's Ashridge Estate. It is made of red brick and has old red tile roofs. The structure is a small rectangular single-storey building oriented north-south, with an octagonal donkey-wheel house attached near the northern end of the west wall. The wheelhouse has three open sides supported by piers on the south side and features an octagonal pointed roof topped with a wrought iron vane. There are two doorways on the east side of the building facing the farmhouse, one of which leads from the wheelhouse. A new deep well was sunk to serve the farm, although it is noted that a mains water system was likely installed by the estate before the well-head machinery was added. The wellhouse is included for its group value with the farmhouse.
