Description
The bridge over the road and revetments to the cutting, located 160 meters south of Nettleden Road, is a Grade II listed structure. This flyover bridge was designed to carry the former principal drive to Ashridge over a local road that has been artificially lowered, featuring revetted sides. It dates from the early 19th century, likely designed by James Wyatt for the Earl of Bridgewater around 1808.
The bridge is constructed of red brick in English bond, with a Portland stone string course, piers, and hogsback-section coping. The revetments are made of similar brick and bond, incorporating large panels of uncoursed knapped flints. The bridge has a Tudor arch with a span of about 4 meters and a height of 3.5 meters to the springing of the arch. It is built in six segments that step up the slope to the south, supporting a wide carriageway for the former drive that runs east-west at the upper level.
Low brick parapets with splayed ends are interrupted by four tall Gothic stone piers on each side, which feature cusped panels on each face and cross-gabled tops. While the lower halves of these piers remain intact, the upper parts have collapsed nearby. The deep cutting with revetted sides extends for some distance.
