Description

Crossways is a house dating to 1911, built for Mr. Spencer Holland. It is constructed of brick with roughcast rendering, topped with steep, red tile roofs. The house is designed in a Queen Anne Revival style, with two main storeys and attics, presenting a symmetrical west front. This front is flanked by single-storey, square pavilions with steep pyramidal roofs and small, louvered lanterns. The west front features a brick plinth, a plastered floor band, a heavy wooden eaves cornice with modillions, and six first floor flush box sash windows with six-over-six panes, each fitted with external shutters (with the second window from each end lacking shutters). The entrance is marked by a shell motif above a six-panel door, set within a four-pilaster door case with a deep, barrel-vaulted, panelled wooden porch supported by two Tuscan columns. Wider eight-over-eight pane sash windows with shutters are located to either side of the porch. Small circular windows are present in each of the flanking pavilions.

The south front is more elaborate, featuring two windows with shutters on each floor, to either side of a recessed centre with a balcony featuring turned balusters supported by four consoles of four pilasters, flanking a door leading to the garden. Two flat-topped dormers are visible on the roof slopes. The east front is simpler in design, incorporating twin canted ground floor bay windows linked by a hipped tile roof.

The interior is thoughtfully detailed, though not particularly elaborate. A sundial, dated 1911, is centrally located in the forecourt.
