Description
The barn at Little Heath Great Farm is a 17th-century structure featuring a timber frame with a red brick sill and dark weatherboarding. It has a steep old red tile roof and consists of a tall five-bay design facing south. The barn includes jowled posts with a hollow chamfer at the chin and long straight braces supporting the tie-beams. Each slope of the roof has two purlins, with the upper purlin clasped by a high collar that diminishes above. The lower purlin is butt jointed to the principals just below the junction of an inclined straight strut across the corner of each truss. Mid-height rails are tenoned in-line, and there is a large unjowled post in the middle of each bay. The butt purlins are staggered in-line, and there are straight wind braces to the lower purlin only in the central bay. The barn features double doors on the south side and a small door on the north side. The farmhouse associated with the barn is not of special interest. The site was transferred from Northchurch parish due to a boundary change on April 1, 1985.
