Description
The Parish Church of St Laurence is a Grade II* listed building located in Hoddesdon, Wormley, on Church Lane. The church dates back to the 12th century, featuring a nave with a Norman door and window, along with 15th-century windows. The chancel was restored between 1843 and 1844, while the south aisle and porch were added in 1862 by J Clarke. The church is constructed with roughcast and stone dressings, and flint and stone dressings on the south side, topped with a machine tile roof.
The Norman door is notable for its two roll-moulded arches and scalloped capitals. The 15th-century windows are characterized by cusped arches and hood moulds, with lancet windows in the chancel and a triplet on the east end. Inside, the nave features stilted arches supported by paired columns and a 15th-century tie beam. A Saxon or early Norman circular font displays a frieze of upright leaves and cable mouldings forming panels. The church also houses a Jacobean hexagonal oak pulpit adorned with term figures.
On the south side of the choir, there is a wall monument to William Purvey from 1617, crafted in alabaster and featuring carved angels and putti. Additionally, a painting attributed to Palma Vecchio was presented in 1797 and is displayed on the east wall. A modern weatherboarded bell-cote is located at the west end of the church.
