Description
The Coal Duty Obelisk next to the bridge over the stream in Cheshunt was erected in 1861 to mark the boundary of the London coal duty. It is one of seven such obelisks in the district. The obelisk is made of painted cast iron and stands about one and a half metres high. It has a square post with a flat pyramid top, chamfered corners, and roll-moulded necking. There is a raised armorial plaque featuring a painted cross, which represents the arms of the City of London.
