Description
The Church of St Mary Ponsbourne is a church built in 1848 and enlarged in 1858 by Lander and Bedells, with the chancel added in 1887 by H Hardwicke Langston. It is constructed from rusticated stone and topped with a slate roof, featuring a cruciform plan in the Early English Gothic style. The steeple at the southwest angle includes a porch, with a square buttressed base that transitions to an octagonal spire adorned with a miniature arcade of trefoiled arches at its base. The west door has three orders of arches and shafts with stiff leaf capitals. The nave features a three-light west window, single lancets on the sides, and triple lancets in the transepts, with a dogtooth course at the eaves. The chancel has corbelled eaves and a three-light plate tracery east window.
Inside, the church is undivided, with a collar purlin roof supported by bosses that feature carved wooden angels. An elaborate circular stone pulpit showcases naturalistic leaf carving and sculptured figures at its base.
