Description
Ashendene, including the Ashendene East Wing and Ashendene West Wing, is a country house that has been subdivided. It was built by J H Wallis between 1887 and 1890 on land that was purchased in 1875. The house is said to have been commissioned for L S Carlisle and is connected with the Ponsbourne Park estate. The initials 'JWC 1887' are found on the hood of the entrance porch. The builder was Norris of Hertford. The structure is made of red brick with elaborately moulded work and features a red tile-hung upper floor. It has steep red tile roofs with white painted woodwork on the bargeboards, gables, dormers, and turrets. This large, irregular house has two storeys and attics, designed in an imaginative, post-Shaw 'Olde English' style with excellent detailing and massing. It is very decorative, retaining intact features and a conservatory. The house has tall chimneys with pilaster strips and features an elaborate canopied porch at the north entrance, with a lower service wing to the east. The main front faces south, overlooking open countryside.
