Description

The Five Horseshoes Public House likely dates to the late 16th or early 17th century, with substantial extensions and remodelling occurring in the late 19th century. The building has a timber-frame core, with portions brick-cased and weatherboarded, alongside stock brick extensions, all whitewashed. The roofs are tiled and slated, with a rebuilt gambrel slope to the rear. Originally a 3-cell block to the rear remains. The left end of the front is rendered on the ground floor and features a recessed 2-light casement. The steeply pitched roof has two 2-light dormers. A central brick stack rises from the ridge, constructed of red and later stock brick with a capping. A slate-roofed lean-to addition is present to the rear. The front block, dating from the 19th century, is four bays wide and constructed in two stages; the entrance is slightly off-centre with a visible straight joint between the sections. The ground floor features tripartite sash windows with slightly cambered, key-blocked brick heads. The first floor has sashes with flat arched brick heads and bracketed sills. Extruded brick stacks with hipped roofs define the right end. A weatherboarded outbuilding extends to the right of the main range, featuring an entrance, small flush frame 2-light casements, and a 2-light dormer in its gambrel roof. The rear of the building has a catslide roof over a continuous lean-to with two entrances, scattered casements, and a dormer. Internally, some of the original timber framing is exposed.
