Description

The Coal Duty Marker is a stone obelisk dating from around 1861, designed to mark the boundary of the area where London coal duty was charged. It stands 3 metres high with a tapered shaft that is broken at the top, rising from a wider tapered base. The east face of the base features the inscription '14 & 15 VIC C 146'. Additionally, the east face of the shaft displays the crest of the City of London, which is a quartered shield with a dagger in the north-west quarter.
