Description

Stansted Castle, located on the south-east side of Grove Hill in Stansted Mountfitchet, is a historical site with origins likely dating back to the 11th century. It was originally owned by the Mountfitchet family and was a ring and bailey type castle. The castle was destroyed in 1215 while held by Richard de Mountfitchet, and after this event, it was not rebuilt. Today, only a small section of flint rubble walling remains on the south side of the ring.
