Description
The barn at Herberts Farm is a building from the mid-16th century, with some rebuilding from the 19th century. It features a timber frame and is weatherboarded, topped with a peg-tiled roof. The southwest elevation has a full-length deep 20th-century lean-to supported by timber posts, covered with a corrugated iron roof. There is a simple off-centre entry waggon-way leading into the barn.
Inside, the barn consists of five bays, with the northwest and southeast ends rebuilt using primary braces made of softwood. The original 16th-century construction follows a uniform system, where each bay has five stout common studs below the middle rail, and above the rail, there are similar studs with nailed curved internal stud braces connecting the posts to a central common stud. The wall plate features a halved and bridle butted scarf joint. The trusses include straight tie-beams and slender curved arched braces, some of which have chiselled numerals. The roof is designed in a clasped side purlin form, with 'diminished' principal rafters and high shallow curved wind braces connecting to the purlins, which have half bay collars and bird-mouth joints. There is no evidence of wattle grooves or holes, indicating that there was likely no external lath and plastering originally.
