Description

The barn attached to Dugates Cottage is a 15th-century structure that has undergone several modifications over the years. Originally an aisled barn, the aisles have been removed, and a brick gable wall was added to the south in the late 18th century, with further alterations occurring in the 19th century. The barn features a timber frame and a lap-tiled roof.

On the exterior, there is a brick plinth and weatherboarded flanks on the east and west sides. The east elevation has double timber doors positioned to the left of center, accompanied by two 2-light windows to the right. The west elevation is mostly hidden by a late 20th-century flat-roofed extension to the attached house, but it does have one pedestrian door on the right. The south gable is made of brick, with exposed studwork in the rendered gable head, and there is an internal gable-end stack.

Inside, the barn retains its frame, including an intact sole plate and wall plate, with three bays of principal studs featuring jowled heads, which were formerly arcade posts. The studs have mortice slots for arched braces connecting to the tie beams and dovetail mortices for aisle braces. The secondary studs are of heavy scantling. The tie beams and roof structure date from the late 19th century and include one tier of purlins and Y struts. Notably, the south wall houses a complete late 18th-century blacksmith's forge, featuring twin bell flues that form the hearth hood.
