Description
The Black Lion Public House is a timber-framed hall house with two crosswings, dating to the 15th century and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed with plaster between exposed framing, and has tiled and slated roofs. The hall and a jettied northeast crosswing date to the 15th century. The southwest crosswing was built in the early 17th century, and its chimney stack, originally at the southwest end of the hall, was rebuilt in the 19th century. A northeast extension, with plain plaster and a slate roof, along with an axial chimney stack, was added in the 19th century. Northwest extensions are from the 20th century. The ground floor features a 20th-century bay window, a plain early 19th-century door, and a 20th-century casement. A bay window with 20th-century casements is located below the jetty. The first floor has three 20th-century casements. A northwest extension includes a glazed door and five 20th-century casements. A photograph taken around 1920 by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments shows the original external lath and plaster finish, which was later stripped, with replacement framing added to the front wall of the hall. A blocked window with three ovolo mullions is visible in the upper southwest wall. The building features jowled storey posts. The tiebeams are straight in the southwest crosswing but cambered in the northeast crosswing, although the roofs are inaccessible. An inserted floor was added to the hall in the late 16th century. The partition wall of the ground floor between the hall and northeast crosswing has been stripped and has much replacement timber. Stop-chamfered beams are present.
