Description
This is an outbuilding dating from around 1500, located on the east side of St Aylotts, connected by an early 20th-century passageway. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, standing on a 19th-century red brick base, with a peg-tiled gabled roof. It has a square plan and two storeys.
On the north elevation, the ground floor features a double casement window with glazing bars, consisting of four panes by two panes. The east elevation is blank but includes a weatherboarded lean-to with a slate roof, which has a small 19th-century stack and a fixed two-light window. The south elevation is also blank, with the linking passage to the house featuring a simple mono-pitched slate roof, a three-light casement window, and a plain door from the 20th century.
Inside, the ground floor displays heavy timber framing with recesses for internal corner bracing similar to that of the main house. The ceiling has been inserted with joists of an early 17th-century type, featuring lamb's tongue chamfer stops. The original use of the outbuilding is unknown, but it has been used as a brewhouse in living memory. Its position, close to the front of the house in front of the hall and solar rooms, suggests it was not originally intended as a kitchen or hunting standing.
