Description
Oakfield Cottage at Butlers Farm is a 17th-century house that features a timber-framed and plastered structure with a shingled roof and a red brick stack located off centre to the south. The building has a T-plan layout, with an older range at the front and a long central right-angled addition made of brick from the 20th century, topped with a shingled mansard roof. It stands one and a half storeys tall.
The front west elevation includes a central fully glazed door, a 'stable' type two-leaf door with an upper light at the north end, and between these doors, there is one two-light window and one single light window. To the south of the centre, there is one double casement window. An off-centre gabled dormer window with a two-light casement is located to the north, showing projecting horns that indicate it is an older addition.
On the south end elevation, the west end features a 17th-century gable with reduced rafters, collar plates, and evident clasping recesses. The ground floor has a fixed diamond lattice window and an upper two-light casement window beneath the collar. To the east, there is a large 20th-century range that includes a fully glazed door, a French window with side lights, one single window, and one three-light window, along with a garage at the east end. This elevation also has three dormer windows with swept roofs, including two three-light and one single light window. The stack is positioned towards the east end.
The north end elevation shows the original 17th-century wall plates on the west gable end. The ground floor features a broad two-light window and an upper two-light window within the gable. The east side of the 20th-century wing has a fully glazed French window and a fully glazed door at the east end, along with one three-light window, one two-light window, and two two-light dormers. The east end elevation is mostly blank, except for a round attic window. The west wall of the old block has one two-light window.
Inside, the old block has been much altered but retains slender primary braced walling and slender ceiling joists.
