Description
Windmill Cottage is a late 14th-century crosswing of a hall house that was extended in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a thatched roof. The two bays at the southern end of the current structure were once part of the western service crosswing of a medieval hall house, the rest of which has been demolished. The southern jettied section has been underbuilt. A chimney was inserted in the northern bay during the 19th century. There is a two-storey extension to the north with an end chimney, also from the 19th century, and a single-storey extension to the north of that, dating from the 19th or early 20th century.
On the eastern elevation, the ground floor features a 20th-century porch, two 20th-century casement windows, and an additional glazed door. The first floor has three 20th-century casement windows. Inside the crosswing, some of the timber framing is exposed, showcasing jowled storey posts, a cambered tiebeam, and curved tension bracing that is trenched to the outside of the studs. The joists are of large square section, and the partition between the service rooms has been removed, leaving visible rebates for service doors. The roof, originally of crownpost construction, was rebuilt with a hip to the south in the 19th century. The 19th-century extension also has some exposed timber framing and incorporates reused timber, with primary straight bracing that was originally plastered over. This building has functioned as two cottages in the past but is now combined into one house.
