Description
The Axe and Compasses Public House is a late 17th century building that has been extended in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure, with weatherboarding on the east and south sides, plastering on the north and west sides, and a thatched roof. Originally, the building consisted of three bays and two storeys, but it was extended to the north by one bay in the 18th century. A single-storey half-hipped extension, also thatched, was added to the south in the 19th century. In the 20th century, a single-storey brick extension with a flat roof was added to the west. Some of the internal framing is exposed, showcasing cranked primary bracing. On the south end of the building, there is a cast iron pump featuring an acorn finial and a handle that ends in a knop, although the maker's name is not visible.
