Description
This granary, located approximately 15 metres west of Friars Grange Farmhouse, dates from the early 17th century. It is timber-framed and covered with weatherboarding, topped with a tiled roof. The walls feature primary straight bracing with brick nogging inserted inside the weatherboards. The roof is fully hipped with a short ridge, giving it an almost pyramidal shape. A central tiebeam made from re-used timber has been inserted. A notable aspect of this granary is that the soffits of all joists, although hidden from view, are fully chamfered with lamb's tongue stops, which is thought to be an apprentice exercise. The structure is supported on four brick piers, and it contains six bins made of machine-sawn softwood from the 19th century.
