Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a large red brick building with stone dressings, built in 1889 according to the design of architect W. D. Carbe, marking an early example of his work. The west tower, added in 1895, reflects his later style. The nave, transepts, and chancel are designed in the perpendicular style, while the west tower features an embattled and pinnacled parapet, along with carved gargoyles and figures, representing a free interpretation of the Gothic style. Inside, the church has exposed brick and stone quatrefoil pillars, as well as an unusual balcony at the west end.
