Description

North House is a house dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber-framed and plastered, with a 'U' plan peg tile roof. The front elevation has a parapet with a timber cornice, and three double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and margin glazing bars. A central doorcase features three-quarter Doric columns supporting an Ionic entablature with a pulvinated frieze and open pediment. Above the original four-panel door, with oval inserts, is a semi-circular fanlight with 'Y' tracery. Canted bay windows with hipped roofs flank either side of the doorway, each featuring a double-hung sash window and margin glazing bars. Attached to the south side is an early 19th-century slate-roofed stable and cottage. The interior includes an early 19th-century turned baluster staircase, reeded fireplaces, and a late 18th-century fireplace in the rear kitchen, featuring a Gothick mantel frieze.
