Description
The Old Vicarage is a notable timber-framed building dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, located in Radwinter. It features close-studded timber framing and plastered walls, with modern alterations and an addition on the south side. The structure has two storeys and attics, including a garderobe tower at the north-west corner. Most windows are modern leaded casements, and the roof is tiled with gabled ends at the east and west, showcasing original decorated bargeboards at the east end. The first floor has a jetty that is now underbuilt, and there are blocked oriel windows at the east end. A large external chimney stack on the north side has been rebuilt at the top.
Inside, the building remains largely unaltered, featuring high-quality timber framing with internal arched tension braces, mullion windows, jowled wall posts, a 17th-century panelled room, and an original door. The Old Vicarage exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship and retains its original 16th-century plan. It includes a rare garderobe tower and many 17th-century internal fittings. The decorative bargeboards on the east elevation face the 14th-century church and churchyard, creating an important architectural group in a prominent village location.
