Description
A pair of cottages with an outbuilding to the south, dating to around 1875 and designed by W.E. Nesfield. The cottages and outbuilding were originally a tailor's shop. They are constructed in an Essex Vernacular style. The ground floors are of red brick, while the first floors are covered in panels of pargetted plaster. The roofs are tiled, with a central brick chimneystack. The cottages are two storeys high and have two windows to the front. The front elevation features two projecting gables with wooden bargeboards that overhang on curved wooden brackets, supporting the eaves. There are four-light wooden casement windows. The ground floor has a plinth and brick piers at the centre and ends. The doorcases contain plank doors topped with rectangular fanlights. The side elevations each have one casement window, and the right-hand cottage also has an additional door. To the south is a single-storey outbuilding with walls of pargetted plaster on a brick plinth. It has a tiled roof and a brick chimneystack at each end, and two triple windows. The group of buildings was designed by Nesfield after a fire in Radwinter and is notable as an example of social housing.
