Description

The United Reformed Church, built around 1877, is a red brick building with bands and detailing in yellow brick, and brick ornamentation. It has a grey slate roof. The building is single-storied, and features a central gabled panel that projects forward, with a stepped cornice made of yellow brick and flat-topped pilaster feet. A stepped cornice extends to all eaves, with a continuous band to the central panel. A moulded band of stylized laurel leaves runs along the window heads, and a yellow band is positioned at sill level. The central double doors are flanked by stone pilasters with moulded capitals, a frieze featuring paterae, and a moulded, flat canopy surmounted by a short stone band with projecting pedimented stops. The building has a 2:1:1:2 window arrangement, with original vertical windows featuring four sliding panes. The upper sliding pane has varied coloured glazed margins. The windows have yellow gauged brick arches and red moulded brick keystones. The two windows to the right and left of the central door share a stone sill with ornate moulded stone brackets and infill of moulded foliar bricks. Matching sills and mouldings are present on the other windows. A central moulded brick plaque on the gable bears the date 1877. The return walls share the same cornices, bands, and mouldings as the front, and feature three windows with matching sills, mouldings, and gable apexes decorated with yellow brick roundels containing carved stone quatrefoil infills. The building is described as unusual and interesting, with the heavily moulded bricks being a unique feature in the local area.
