Description
Clarence House is a Grade I listed building located at 22 Watling Street in Thaxted, built in 1715. It is constructed of red brick and features a red plain tile roof. The house has two storeys, attics, and cellars, with a seven-window range. The 18th-century double-hung vertical sliding sashes have glazing bars and are topped with keystone segmental heads. The central doorcase is adorned with a segmental pediment and fluted pilasters with composite capitals. A parapet crowns the building, and there are three dormers with segmental and triangular pediment heads. The west end includes a single-storey addition with a flat hooded doorcase and a two-window range of double-hung vertical sliding sashes, also with glazing bars. The front of the house features two rainwater heads inscribed with the year 1715 and the initials W.H.E. Internally, much of the original detailing remains, and there are red brick chimney stacks.
