Description
The Redoubt in Harwich is a historic military structure built between 1808 and 1810, constructed from brick and granite. It features a circular design with an internal courtyard and brick vaulted chambers. Surrounding the Redoubt is a circular dry moat, which originally had a drawbridge that has since been replaced by a concrete span. Some original fittings remain, including iron railings, a hoist, and a lantern in the magazine wall. The Redoubt was designed as a bomb-proof fortification with the capability to withstand a prolonged siege. In 1861, it was remodeled but retained the same basic plan. The upper level of the structure includes batteries that were originally intended for ten 24-pounder cannons; one cannon, dating from 1865, has been excavated from the moat. The moat's revetment is made of brick.
