Description

Cottage Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations and additions from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The original sections are timber framed, while a red and black brick range from around 1800 features some exposed frame, and there is also a brick-built range from the 19th century. The house has chimney stacks on the left and right ranges, and it is topped with red plain tiled and grey slate roofs. It stands two storeys tall, or two storeys and attics, with a complex plan that includes a gabled range to the right with a single-storey lean-to and rear ranges.

The front facade has a window arrangement of 2:2, featuring vari-light casements with mullions and vertically sliding sashes. The entrance includes a six-panel, two-light door with a moulded surround, a floral motif on the frieze, and Corinthian columns and pilasters that support a moulded flat canopy. One of the rear return walls displays serpentine braces, and the ground floor is bricked-in.

Inside, the farmhouse features restored back-to-back inglenook fireplaces from the 16th century on the ground floor, along with a bedroom fireplace that has chamfered brick jambs and a wooden cambered and moulded mantel beam. Some rooms have stop-chamfered bridging and ceiling joists, and there is a 17th-century panelled door. An arched brace can be found on a bedroom wall, and heavy section bridging and on-edge ceiling joists are present. The ground floor also includes two 18th-century corner cupboards, one with pilaster jambs, and a smaller 18th-century cupboard on the first-floor landing. A stick baluster staircase with a moulded open string leads to the upper levels, and there is an 18th-century door with HL hinges and the original catch for the attic door. The attic stairs are located around the chimney, and the roof has been partly restored but is pegged at the ridge.
