Description
This is a late 18th-century building, originally thought to have been built as a malting office, assembly room, or even a hotel for a planned spa development by Richard Rigby. It now comprises three separate dwellings facing Swan Fountain. The building is constructed of red brick, with Fountain House on the left now painted. It has a double-range with hipped red tile roofs and two red brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and a parapet, with a stone dentilled band running underneath a central band. The three central bays project forward, topped by a dentilled pediment that breaks through the parapet to reveal a circular window at the apex. The fenestration is arranged in a 3:3:3 window range on the first floor, comprising 2-light casements (some 20th century replacements), with those in bays 2, 7, and 9 being blocked. A central semi-elliptical window is also blocked. The ground floor windows are small-paned vertically sliding sash windows. A central semi-elliptical porch is supported by Tuscan columns. There are two recessed and angled vertically boarded doors, as described in reference 3/227.
