Description

No. 26 on King's Quay Street is a house dating from the late 18th century, with possible earlier origins. It features a timber frame with a red Flemish-bond brick front and a gabled roof covered in clay plain tiles. The building has two storeys, attics, and cellars.

The front exterior includes a flat-roofed dormer with a two-light casement window set behind a plain parapet. On the first floor, there is a square 19th-century tripartite double-hung sash window within a moulded surround, situated in an old opening with a rubbed brick flat arch. Flanking this window are blind recesses that also have similar flat brick arches. The ground floor features another tripartite window, a blind window recess, and a doorcase topped with a flat hood. The entrance has a recessed six-panel door with raised-and-fielded panels, and the sides of the recess are also panelled. A flat-roofed belvedere sits atop the building, and there is a large chimney stack on the ridgeline that it shares with No. 25.

At the rear, there is a three-storey early 19th-century extension with a low-pitched Welsh slate roof. The southwest gable is made of brick, while the two upper floors are clad in black weatherboarding, each featuring a small-paned double-hung sash window. The ground floor of this extension is recessed.

Inside, the house retains a very complete late 18th-century interior, including a panelled entrance corridor partition. The front room has a simple cornice and fitted cupboards with serpentine shelves, along with a fireplace and several reeded architraves decorated with a flower motif. The ground floor of the rear extension has two fireplace flank recesses with segmental reeded arches and reeded bowed shelves. Some of the timber framing is exposed, made of softwood, and there is a tight winder staircase with turned balusters.
