Description
No. 4 Church Street is a house built in the late 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of rendered brick and features a reduced parapet and a gambrel roof covered with 20th-century clay pantiles, along with two flat-roofed dormers. The building has two storeys with attics. The front of the house includes a moulded brick cornice, which is now rendered. On the first floor, there are two recessed double-hung sash windows with small panes. The ground floor also has two similar windows and an early 19th-century doorcase that features moulded pilasters, a moulded frieze, and consoles that support a flat hood. The entrance has a recessed six-panel door with panelled reveals and a decorative fanlight above. A central rendered ridgeline stack is present.
Inside, the entrance hall contains two 18th-century doorways with eared architraves. There is a narrow winder staircase that includes a short section of Chinese Chippendale balustrade on the first flight. The roof space has a room with four fitted 'Pilot' bunks around the walls and small windows that provide a view of the High Lighthouse, likely from the 19th century.
