Description
The Round House is a house located at 7 Cliffway in Frinton-on-Sea, built around 1935 by Oliver Hill. It is a Modern Movement house, constructed with plaster, possibly over concrete, and features a flat roof with a chimney stack at the rear left. The building is circular and consists of two storeys. Originally, it was designed as the Frinton Park Estate Offices and included a mural depicting the estate's plan, though it is unclear if this mural still exists.
On the first floor, there are three curved six-light windows, a two-light window to the left, and two small circular windows to the right. A flat canopy extends around the ground floor, which has two three-light windows and a glazed door on the left, and a porch with small circular windows on the side walls and a glazed door on the right.
The Frinton Park Estate, where this house is located, was developed starting in 1934 as a planned residential community but was not fully realized due to a lack of public support for flat-roofed houses. Despite being surrounded by other buildings now, the estate still contains the largest group of Modern Movement houses in the country. Although the glazing has been recently replaced, The Round House remains a significant architectural feature, noted for its circular design, projecting 'skirt', and its role as a focal point within the model estate.
