Description

Brantham House and the railings attached to the front steps are located on the south side of High Street in Manningtree. This building dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of red brick, possibly with earlier timber framing. It features a hipped grey slate roof and has red brick chimney stacks on both the right and left sides. The house is two storeys tall with a basement and consists of three bays, with the central bay projecting forward and end pilasters.

The façade includes a three-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes, which are present in the basement as well, all set under gauged brick arches. A raised doorway is accessed by steps from both the right and left sides, featuring a door with three moulded panels and reveal panels. The doorway is flanked by fluted half columns with capitals and bases, and the frieze is decorated with triglyphs and metopes, while the flat canopy has guttae.

The cast iron railings attached to the roadside edge of the steps extend to the ends of the property. These railings feature balusters that form pointed arches below three top rails, which support scallops and roundels on quatrefoils. The railings are tripartite with different tracery designs on the step treads. Brantham House and its railings are significant features situated at an acute angle on High Street.
