Description
The University of Essex Sailing Club, formerly known as Pannell and Hibbs Sail Loft, is a former sail loft dating from the 19th century. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded, topped with a grey slate roof and features bargeboards with a finial. It has two storeys and a loft. The ground floor includes a shop front with central double glazed doors flanked by three-light windows on either side. The first floor has small paned vertically sliding sash windows and central double doors, with a single window in the loft that has glazing bars. This exterior is depicted in a postcard from the late 19th century. A viewing balcony supported by arch-braced cast iron columns was added in the early 20th century when the building transitioned to a yacht club. Internally, the frame remains intact.
