Description
The Brightlingsea War Memorial was designed by Richard Reginald Goulden and unveiled in 1921 to commemorate those lost in the First World War, with later additions for the Second World War. The memorial is constructed from white granite with bronze plaques and takes the form of a cenotaph, a large rectangular block of granite that steps outwards at its base. It stands at the intersection of four stone-paved paths. Bronze plaques are attached to the west and east faces, featuring relief sculptures of the heads of three servicemen in profile. Narrow, bronze plaques with inscribed names of the deceased, surmounted by wreaths, are on the north and south sides; a small additional plaque lists those who died in the Second World War. Carved inscriptions at the top of the east and west faces read: IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE /THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR. The paths leading to the cenotaph are stepped gradually. The memorial is set within a small, wedge-shaped garden. The surrounding wall, gates, and benches are not included in the listing.
