Description

Martello Tower, built around 1808 to 1812, is located off Jaywick Promenade in Clacton-on-Sea. Constructed from vari-coloured brick, with some plaster still visible, the bricks were made in Grays, Essex. The tower features a stone parapet and rusticated stone dressings around four windows and a door positioned at half height. It was built at an approximate cost of £5,000, with the garrison stationed at Weeley Barracks due to the unhealthy coastal conditions. The tower was designed to guard a sluice that could be opened to flood the surrounding marshes in the event of an invasion.
